Underpass, a musical play, was produced and performed by a performing arts group named WhileLight Productions and was Directed by Jimbo Mirasol. The theatre performance was held in Dasmariñas, Cavite in June 2014.
The reason behind the title and setting “Underpass” is because of its accessibility. Underpass symbolizes the journey of people wherein they can easily enter and go out of it, and as they go through it, the underpass evens them out.
There are three main characters in the center plot: Jeboy, a 17-year-old high school dropout who works at Takatak. By the end of the day, he goes to the underpass together with the Kabatak Boys and consumes their favorite inhalant: rugby. Erika, the sister of Jeboy who is against his doings. Lastly, Paul, Jeboy’s friend who is still trying to go through the pressure of high school. Jeboy and Paul met, but they didn’t know that the reunion would bring them to a path they thought they already knew. This story unveils how simple desires can become destructive to people if not given the right options.
John Harvey Garcia (Jeboy), Regina Timan (Erika), and Joshua Encomienda (Paul) acting completely awake to opposite emotions. Their voices while singing and acting were clearly heard which made the storyline more understandable.
The story was clearly done to promote drug awareness to the youth as the issue of drugs has always been prevalent in our society. The theatre play, the characters, and the people behind the scene showed and made the youth aware of this issue by showing them how destructive it is to people, especially to them, the youth. I think their way of raising awareness, which is in a form of theatrical play, is very inspiring as they are not only entertaining the audience but they are also being informative. I think that’s a great idea to capture the attention of the youth, especially if they are raising awareness. In that way, the audience can easily realize what they wanted to deliver, and how the play gives place to joy, then rage, and untold sorrow. No doubt, the actors deliver their characters well.
