The Dekada '70 musical depicts the story of a Filipino middle-class family during the time of the Martial Law and the Marcos regime. It was both a patriotic and a protest piece, meaning that although the musical was tackling a very sensitive topic about the Filipinos during the 1970s, it still showed great love for the nation.
The play started as the main characters were introduced in the story namely Amanda and Julian; and their children Jules, Gani, Em, Jason, and Bingo.
As the story unfolds, it's no surprise that the lights, sounds, and the minimal set design added up to how us viewers perceive the situation. According to one of the reviews that I've also read, the tone and the mood of the scenes change so suddenly, depicting how life during the Marcos era was unpredictable and confusing. It was like a metaphor and a creative reminder that as real as it may seem, the life of the characters was mirrored in the life of Filipinos back then.
The plot thickens when one of the main characters or one of the children was accused of using marijuana. This is one of the scenes in the play that were so heavy and horrifying, because just after a delightful scene, this situation happened and the character was killed. Moreover, this scene is also one of those breathtaking ones, and according to the audiences, they really felt as if they were witnessing a crime, and as if they were really part of the 1970s.
With that, I believe that the musical was successful in portraying the injustices and the sufferings that the people have experienced in the past. It teaches us different social issues as well such as the matriarchy vs. patriarchy, women empowerment, activism, youth in the frontlines, and so on. It is really beneficial and educational and I think that Filipinos, most especially the youth, should watch this, as it helps us in learning our history and the realities our countrymen have faced.
Overall, Dekada '70 is a masterpiece; known for triggering their audience to reach the peak of emotions most especially with its fearful and powerful scenes. Even other reviews have mentioned that once you are sitting as one of the audiences, you will feel like you are also a character. The production's wonderful work when it comes to their acting, sounds and lighting made it impossible for those who watched it to not pay attention. It is truly overwhelming and with that, I can say that the musical play is one for the books.
